Two-letter words are the backbone of advanced Scrabble. They let you play parallel to an existing word, create multiple scoring words simultaneously, and reach premium squares your opponent left unguarded.
The NWL currently contains 107 valid two-letter words. Mastering the high-value and unusual ones will change how you see the board.
High-scoring two-letter words
The ones most players don't know
ZA (slang for pizza) and ZO (a Tibetan bovine) are two of the most valuable plays beginners miss. Both use the 10-point Z without needing an obscure pairing.
JO (a Scottish term of endearment), KA (the spiritual double in Egyptian belief), and KI (the Japanese life energy) are frequently challenged — and always survive. Know them cold.
Board tip: Two-letter words shine most when played parallel to an existing word. A single parallel play can score on 2–3 words simultaneously while the face value looks small.
Vowel-heavy two-letter words
When your rack is loaded with vowels, AA (volcanic rock), OE (a Faeroe Islands whirlwind), AI (a three-toed sloth), and AE (one, in Scottish) are lifesavers. Each dumps a vowel while keeping you legal.
